Khon Kaen Thailand: Typical scene showing street venders haggling with a potential buyer, who did actually buy something eventually.

Khon Kaen Thailand: All kinds of medicinal herbs are offered for sale along the sidewalks. The "pharmacist" offered on-the-spot advice to a couple "patients" as I watched

2 February 2003

Hello from Khon Kaen Thailand.

Crossing the Mekong River from Laos over the Friendship Bridge the first Thai town is Nung Khai where one may catch a train for points south. Six days in Khon Kaen at the elegant $27 Kosa Hotel.  MORE TO WRITE FROM JOURNAL NOTES.

Peace,
Fred Bellomy

Khon Kaen Thailand: "What's for dinner?" Yep; this is something to eat! They look like large cockroaches, but actually are some sort of water bug. Everyone swears they are delicious! Yum, yum.

Khon Kaen Thailand: One of the many fighting cocks I've seen all over Thailand. They are kept in the upturned baskets until time to fight. The bird in this basket had missing feathers and bloody bare patches of skin covered his vicious little body.

Nung Khai Thailand: At the railway station after crossing the border from Laos . Notice the sign for a 250 Baht guesthouse in the background... that's about $6 a night. I didn't check it out, but imagine rather simple accommodations.

Nung Khai Thailand: At the railway station near the Laos border. Tuk-Tuk drivers-touts were competing for business driving travelers the 2km to the border bus area.

Nung Khai Thailand: At the railway station near the Laos border; across the street are many shops selling food and other things travelers might need.

Khon Kaen Thailand: The mythical serpent guarding the entrance to Wat Nongwang Muang Kao. A Thai legend
tells how this guy actually appeared during an ancient major battle and helped the army defeat its enemy. When I asked, the monk said people actually believe it happened!
