Erbil- This is a shot of the 100 meter Ring Road running past the $120 Bella Roma Hotel where I found myself dropped on arrival at 11PM.

Erbil- Breakfast buffet layout at the (grossly over rated 5 star!) Bella Roma Hotel where I found myself dropped on arrival at 11PM.

Erbil- More of the breakfast buffet layout at the (not worth a 5 star rating) Bella Roma Hotel where I found myself dropped on arrival at 11PM.

Erbil- Entrance to the $120 Bella Roma Hotel where I found myself dropped on arrival at 11PM.  The night receptionist spoke tolerable English and accepted my Turkish lira cash for the negotiated $100 cash room rate. The first room he assigned me still had the mess from a previous guest. The second room faced a cluttered alleyway.

Erbil- Lobby furniture in the $120 Bella Roma Hotel where I found myself dropped on arrival at 11PM in Erbil. Obviously the same deranged interior decorator planned the design of the lobby, too... but, that's just my taste.

Erbil- Front of the $120 Bella Roma Hotel where I found myself dropped on arrival at 11PM.

Erbil- Furnishings in my room at the (not worth the 5 star rating!) Bella Roma Hotel where I found myself dropped on arrival at 11PM. They need to hire a new interior decorator, in my opinion.

Erbil- View of the alley from my room to the right at the (hardly 5 star quality) Bella Roma Hotel where I found myself dropped on arrival at 11PM.

Erbil- View of the trash pile in the alley from my room to the left at the (not 5 star quality) Bella Roma Hotel where I found myself dropped on arrival at 11PM.

Erbil- Shot of the other buildings around the Bella Roma Hotel.

Erbil- A few of the people in the audience watching the commotion being caused by the truck with the loud speaker and flags.

Erbil- This is the guy causing all the commotion with his amplified announcements and flags; it is Kurdistan Flag Day.

Erbil- More of the people in the audience watching the commotion being caused by the truck with the loud speaker and flags.

Erbil - Bread cooling outside a bakery near the Citadel bazaar... a closer look.

Erbil - Erbil Tower Hotel just north of the citadel with $50 rates and VISA credit card payment; one of only two hotels I found that would accept credit card payments... other than the several five star houses out on the periphery of the city. This is the tower part.

Erbil - Erbil Tower Hotel just north of the Citadel with $50 rates and VISA credit card payment, small bathroom and meager breakfast buffet in dark, dismal dining room.

Erbil - Statue in the middle of a traffic circle near the Erbil Tower Hotel.

Erbil - Get too curious about my spy camera activities and you just might become the subject of a picture. Got'cha.

Erbil - One of the few hotels in the city which honors international credit cards. Boasting four stars, at $80 it might be worth 2 or 3.

Erbil - Gasoline is cheap in Iraq, here about $4 a gallon, half the cost in nearby Turkey.

Erbil - Highway sign pointing to major features in the city; note the Mudhafarea Minaret which I photographed without knowing its name.

Erbil - The Citadel restoration project is being undertaken none too soon!

Erbil - As I walked the periphery of the mound I could see many of the walls crumbling.

Erbil - This part of the Citadel is badly in need of repairs.

Erbil- One of the picturesque tree lined streets in the Citadel. Tourists are excluded from most areas like this during the restoration process.

Erbil- Poster explaining the restoration of streets in the Citadel .

Erbil - Walking the periphery I could see many of the old Citadel walls crumbling.

Erbil - Some parts of the Citadel appear to have been recently reconstructed.

Dicey Greetings from Erbil Iraq in "Kurdistan"

This page contains more photos taken while in Erbil Iraq. Don't miss the rest of the pictures that accompany the postcard text.

Iraq: In the immigration office while we waited for our names to be called to pick up our passports with the new Kurdistan visa stamp, a couple guys wandered around serving sweetened tea in Styrofoam cups to everyone. I kept my eyes on the scrolling banner offering greetings in several languages and when the "Welcome to Iraq" appeared snapped an "illegal" photo before the nonchalant guard could motion this is forbidden... with a smile!

Erbil- Erbil International Hotel was the Sheraton until 2004 when it changed hands.

Erbil - The Erbil International Hotel is still international and the flags prove it.

Erbil - Bread cooling outside a bakery near the Citadel bazaar.

Erbil - At the end of Cell phone alley buyers and sellers clog the street stopping all traffic as they negotiate their deals.

Erbil- Yesterday Kurds celebrated flag day and the modified Iraqi flags are everywhere still. Notice the golden sun in the middle of the usual Iraq flag design.

Erbil - Statue in the middle of the traffic circle near the Erbil Tower Hotel.

Erbil - Another of the elegant houses in a residential area of the city toward the airport.

Eribil- Landscaped median as seen from an overpass on the 100 Meter Road near Ankawa spoke street.

Erbil- Passenger terminal is very basic. This is the best shot I could get without attracting attention of all the security people.

Erbil- Unusual tube sculpture outside the airport terminal.

Erbil: Plaza full of fountains at the base of the south entrance to the Citadel. The arcade around the periphery host numerous small shops and cafes: very pleasant.

Erbil- Looking down to the NNW at the city below from the north gate of the Citadel . That is the Erbil Tower Hotel in the upper left corner, a very good budget value.

Erbil- Notice posted inconspicuously at the entrance to the Erbil International Hotel where I stayed. As I snapped the picture several staff monitored my activities closely, two finally approaching to check out my gadget. I worry that with cell phone cameras being so common, people will soon stop putting their faces in my camera for all the delightful portraits I have been able to get up 'til now.

Erbil- Bellman at the Erbil International Hotel where I stayed got curious about my tiny camera; you know the rest.

Erbil- Security staff member at the Erbil International Hotel where I stayed got curious about my tiny camera. You can't be too careful about suspicious characters doing suspicious things with suspicious looking gadgets... but, he smiled all the while.

Erbil- This is Anwar Dawood, the receptionist at the Erbil International (Sheraton) Hotel with reasonably good English who helped me negotiate a manageable room rate for a long Xmas period stay and took the time to explain what he knew about the Kurdish culture and history of the hotel.

Erbil- This is the young breakfast time waiter at the Erbil International (Sheraton) Hotel I watched as he lifted a bread plate to his face and deftly blew off something before setting the plate on a table ready for the next guest... and then repeated the performance a second time... in case I'd missed the first time. Them plates can't be too clean, 'ya know.

Erbil- Waiters in the background ignore scruffy tourists like me, but fawn over the suit and tie crowd. Most guests fit into the latter category. Tourists are a rare few during my stay.

Erbil - Guest relations staffer, Midia at the Erbil International Hotel who provided friendly help with transportation information.

Erbil - Departing shot of the carefully guarded security gate at the Erbil International Hotel, known locally by its old name, the Sheraton.

Erbil - Highway sign at the corner where the Sheraton is located. Notice the security camera at the lower left corner.

Erbil- The Erbil International Hotel, formerly the Sheraton is surrounded by this ten foot high concrete explosion proof wall with the hotel building at least fifty feet beyond.

Erbil -Pond with fountain in a small park across the street from the Sheraton Hotel.

Erbil - Wonder if this refers to the prophet of old and if so what old Abraham does for your compute.

Erbil - Cell phone alley on a street south of the Citadel seems to be very popular.

Erbil- Yet another beautiful mosque.

Erbil- This kid got curious about my camera at the north gate of the Citadel . Got'cha.

Erbil- then his friend got curious too. Got'cha.

Erbil- I tried to get them both to smile for a picture, but failed to time all the joking just right.

Erbil- Landscaped median as seen from an overpass on the 100 Meter Road near Ankawa spoke street.

Erbil- Another beautiful mosque.

Erbil - Looking down the covered shopping arcade on one side of the plaza at the south entrance to the Citadel.

Erbil- The plaza at the base of the south entrance to the Citadel mound seems to be a popular gathering place for males of all ages.

Erbil - The Citadel is being restored. Walking the periphery I could see many of the walls crumbling.

Erbil- Radar speed traps even here in Iraq.
