have a confession to make. The materials presented in these "postcards" were written as I traveled. Individual missives often got mailed long after I had left the places described, usually omitting interesting details as I scrambled to both create a record and locate reliable Internet connections with which to send it. In this hypertexturized version everything is reassembled in the order it happened, augmented by my voluminous contemporaneous notes and piles of reference materials collected along the way. To that I have added other materials not in the original versions, new recollections, supporting materials from other sources, observations after reflection, conclusions after pondering, and extended research from the comfort of home base. I supposed most people would expect as much, but for the sake of intellectual honesty it seems best to say it. After all, I do still represent this as a collection of "postcards."
